PLAN

Plan to be there for the long haul. It's not an easy road but you'll never be in the right place at the right time if you give up along the way.

A plan makes sure you are progressing. Publication might be years away. If you measure success by publication then you are in danger of giving up before you get there.

Planning creates goals and milestones to measure achievement - completing a course, completing a manuscript, receiving positive feedback, sending out a manuscript, receiving a personal rejection letter - all these things count.

I had a simple five year plan, fully expecting it to be extended another five. But that didn't matter to me. I wanted to make sure that each year I was moving forward

My plan: Year 1 - Write. Year 2 - Learn heaps, write even more Year 3 - Show others, get feedback and write more Year 4 - Send out manuscripts Year 5 - Be published - maybe not a novel but something, anything, somewhere, anywhere....

A formal plan is self perpetuating. I decided when I finally did something published, I needed some funds for a launch - so I planned to save $5 a week - whenever I could. I figured seeing as it would take a long time - all the dollars would begin to slowly add up - but one day I would be ready.
